Balcony with 30 x 30 cm tiles

For many people, the balcony is the outdoor living room, and it’s always in season! And it must have a suitable, frost-proof floor covering. Particular attention should be paid to professional laying in this sensitive area, because many factors such as moisture, frost and heat come together here, giving rise to many requirements for the overall construction of covering, laying material and subsurface. Choosing the right balcony covering is a major challenge. Standards stipulate the use of light-coloured tiles with a maximum size of 30 x 30 cm. Balconies must have a structural incline of at least 2% to ensure drainage of the covering. This gradient must be created with materials that are suitable for outdoor use, so apply caution when using levelling compounds, which often have a not inconsiderable proportion of gypsum content. A bonded seal must be installed under the ceramic covering. In instances of areas above used rooms, a functional flat roof structure in accordance with ÖNORM EN 3691 must be present, in addition to the bonded waterproofing. The buttering-floating technique must be used outdoors in order to achieve a standard-compliant bedding of more than 90%. Balcony end profiles must be flush with the subsurface to prevent waterlogging and the associated frost damage. We therefore recommend reworking with a sealing tape. If you have any questions about the selection of the sealing tape and its pre-treatment, please contact your MUREXIN specialist consultant, since the variety of materials and their pre-treatment can vary.
