Swimming pool cement

Cement-based sealing systems have proven their value in common swimming pools (not including brine or thermal pools). Product innovations, ever-increasing demands for health protection, hygiene and the longevity of building materials have an impact on the planning and realization of swimming pools. Safe sealing systems are the basis for functioning swimming pools and wellness areas. Professional planning, sufficient coverage of joints, proper use of materials and standard-compliant execution are indispensable. Processing by experienced specialist companies is recommended. Adhesion-inhibiting layers, such as sinter layers on concrete that is at least 6 months old, must be removed by sandblasting, diamond grinding or similar until the substrate is stable. Any cracks must be filled with an injection resin on site. Different products are recommended for application depending on the type of pool edge, the type of water, the choice of tiling and the tile format. In principle, the impermeability of a waterproof concrete pool – or the sealing layer in the case of reinforced concrete pools – is to be tested immediately before the start of the attachment and laying work of ceramic tiles and slabs as well as suitable natural stones by means of a test filling of the pool lasting at least two weeks up to the level of the pool edge (raw concrete). After a sufficient drying time, this is done with chlorinated water (2 mg/l) in order to exclude any defects.

The attachment and laying of the ceramic covering in the swimming pool must be carried out using the buttering-floating technique. Care must be taken to ensure that the installation is free of cavities (<10%). When laying mosaics, make sure that the front side is stuck to paper or film. Care must also be taken to ensure that the installation is free of cavities. Structural joints in the body of the pool or structural expansion joints are to be used as covering joints. Valuable detailed information on swimming pool construction can be found in the relevant ZDB information sheet and the ZDB specialist information. In general, no cementitious products may be used in the case of exposure to lime-aggressive water.
